There are three major calendars in use on the continent of Alandoria == Human == The Human calendar, dates years starting from the formation of the Magii Council -- thus 1913 years after the founding of this council is when the game will begin. The human calendar is based on various studies of the seasons and thus has 4 months (Spring, Summer, fall, Winter). Each month contains 90 days giving a total of 360 days in the year. == Dwarf == The Empire of Mithras dates from the establishment of the Empire and the beginning of its expansion, making current day the 170th year of the Mithras Empire. The Empire has a number of other dating systems sometimes used for reference (5th year of the reign of Emperor BronzeHammer, etc) which greatly complicates their calendar for anyone who is not a historian. Their calendar is quasi-religious to them and is based on feasts to their various dieties, with the largest feast being to The Great Smithy Grimhammer which marks the first of the year. Thus Dwarves date the days leading up to these key feasts. Winter, Day 87 to the humans therefore would be "The 4th day preceding the feast of the Great Smithy" to the dwarves. However, the Dwarves do have the same number of days in the year as the humans, keeping their years blessedly aligned. == Elf == The Elvish calendar is lunar and bears no real resemblance to the seasonal calendars of the humans and dwarves. The moon cycle in Alandoria is 20 days. Apparently in reverence to the moon, the number 20 is considered the perfect/complete number in Elvish religion, astrology and superstitions. As such, the elves reckon a year as 20 moons (400 days). Each moon is named thus any given day is identified by its number in the month. Years are not used for giving dates, only for references in history and are grouped in multiples of 20. Thus 20 years makes up one short group, 20 short groups make up one long group, 20 long groups make up one age, 20 ages makes up one epoch. An age is roughly the equivalent of 9000 years in human reckoning with one Epoch equaling nearly 180,000 human years. The 20 Elvish months are: Phoenix, Bear, Tiger, Fish, Snake, Horse, Frog, Panther, Bull, Eagle, Hawk, Lion, Wolf, Whale, Griffon, Deer, Ram, Raven, Mammoth, Dragon. Thus the Dragon ends a year and the Phoenix begins another anew. == Comparison == Thus the same date on three calendars in long form would be: Human Reckoning: 87th Day of Winter in the year of the Magii 1912 Dwarf Reckoning: 4th day preceeding the feast of the Great Smithy in the 169th year of the Mithras Empire Elf Reckoning: 17th Day of the Fish of the 16th year of the 19th Short group of the 19th long group of the 19th age of the 12th Epoch In short forms the same date is represented as: Human Short Date: 87 Winter YM1912 Dwarf Short Date: 4 Great Smithy Feast 169 Elf Short Date: 17 Fish 184.108.40.206.12 It should be noted that Human/Dwarf New Year only falls on the same day as Elvish new year every 10 human years or 9 elvish years. The elves consider this day an ill omen since 9 does not divide evenly into nor is it a multiple of the number 20. The next time this event will occur is 1 Spring YM1914
